Random Salzburg

This is just such a beautiful city.

You can’t really see it, but all down the street to the right today was a market. Probably close to a hundred booths selling everything from Sicilian bread to lavender pillows.

Another stop at the IceZeit. It could always be time for ice cream. We were behind a school group, but it was worth the wait. I enjoyed watching the girl filling orders. It was as though she lived to make sure everyone got what they ordered and left happy. She never lost her patience or her sweet smile, and her “Have a good day!” by the time she got to us seemed completely genuine.

This isn’t a great picture of the girls, but I’m including it because of the interesting juxtaposition between the three of them, who had just had WAY too much fun at H & M (a store that I was hitherto unaware even existed, let alone knew was the apparent epitome of fashion), and the lady to the left in her Austrian dress.

We had some time to kill before the St Martin bus left, so we went back to the Mirabel Gardens. Such a lovely place to spend an hour. Margaret wanted to collect enough coins to go back to IceZeit but was not allowed to do so.

Elizabeth is in love with her new stuffed bunny from H & M. I think it’s hilarious that her expression is pretty much the same as that of the stone lion behind her.

Every time we’ve been to the Gardens I’ve seen wedding parties. I thought they were just using it as a fabulous backdrop for their wedding pictures, but I learned today that everyone who gets married in Austria has to have a civil ceremony. They can add a church wedding too if they like, but the civil ceremony is a requirement, and city hall is upstairs in the Schloss Mirabel, the palace you can see behind Elizabeth and the lion. Weddings take place three mornings a week. That probably explains the newlyweds we saw in Bad Reichenhall yesterday.
