Look, Ma! No helmets!

The rental house came with four bikes. Today we rented two more from the local bike shop so that we can take some all-family trips during our last week here, assuming the weather cooperates. Tim asked the owner if he could rent a helmet for Elizabeth, and the man laughed and said, “No one in the Netherlands wears helmets.”

That’s not quite true, but almost, since I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of helmets I’ve observed in use since we came here. I guess this will be a brief, free interlude in the kids’ safe and overprotected American lives. Please don’t tell our pediatrician.
